Roaming a red carpet at an awards show probably isn’t the best way for a young lawyer to sign clients. But meet Sam Goldberg, a former child actor turned radio host turned “Mr. Law School.” Apparently, he received training on the Howard Stern show and is adding to his talents by attending law school.

A few days ago he showed up at VH1’s Do Something Awards, where he caught Alyssa Milano and others on the red carpet and asked their thoughts on lawyers (and, of course, whether they’d hire him).

The Wall Street Journal
By WSJ Staff

Volunteerism was the big winner at last night’s Do Something Awards, which celebrate good works performed by young people on behalf of specific causes and communities. Hosted by Jane Lynch of “Glee,” the awards ceremony mixed together awards for regular individuals (Jessica Pozner was the evening’s big winner, taking home $100,000 to expand her school for girls in Kenya’s largest slum) and for celebrities, such as Kathy Griffin for “Do Something Comedian” and the Twilight Saga’s Kellan Lutz for “Do Something for Animals” winner.

Lynch kicked off the program with a sketch involving her ticking off a list of “good deeds” she needed to do before the hosting the show (to promote literacy, she read “Eat Pray Love” to a couple of construction workers) and walked onto the stage amidst a sea of blondes all dressed as… Jane Lynch. She also talked the audience through a slideshow that inserted her image into pivotal moments of do-good-ism, such as working with Mother Teresa, Jane Goodall, and of course, Lindsay Lohan. (Naturally, the LiLo reference was a joke.)

Later on during the program, Snoop Dogg and Christina Applegate also picked up awards, as did Twitter Queen Alyssa Milano, who immediately tweeted out thanks to her fans.

If you haven't seen the recent videos between Old Spice and Alyssa Milano, you're missing one of the most successful viral campaigns in history.

If you haven’t watched the Old Spice TV and Internet ads, you’re missing one of the most successful viral campaigns in history.

Actor and former football star Isaiah Mustafa, who wows viewers with his bare-chested, smooth-talking delivery, has produced video replies to hundreds of online queries or comments tweeted to him by Web users, including questions from George Stephanopolous and Alyssa Milano.

Naturally, others are trying to figure out how to duplicate Old Spice’s success.

Writing this week on GovLoop (better known to some as the “Facebook for Feds”), Gwynne Kostin, director of new media and citizen engagement at the General Services Administration, shared four lessons federal agencies should take from the ads’ success as they move more information and services online:

1.) Speed: “The Old Spice team created video responses in real time. Someone — sometimes famous and sometimes not — would tweet, and in minutes there was a response. And it was good. We hadn’t seen this level of real time before, but we like it.”

2.) Planning: “How do you make 180 videos, have them distributed across multiple networks and garner 11 million views in 3 days? Very carefully. This was a well-designed and executed plan. … Setting up a Twitter account days into a crisis is much less effective than building a follower base and expertise to broadcast information that scales.”

3.) Talent: “Does your staff look at the Old Spice campaign and wish they could do something like that? You want high quality output? Find and nurture the folks who can do that work. And give them the space.”

4.) Trust: “It’s up to the folks in dot-gov to build the trust and to show the judgment necessary to take on risk. You create trust by building relationships, by showing success on smaller projects, by understanding the needs of the organization and developing programs to meet mission goals.”

But GovLoop users are skeptical they could ever replicate the Old Spice success in the public sector, thanks to rules, regulations, and the naturally slow pace of government. What do you think? What would you do? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

UPDATE: Old Spice Challenge

I was totally thrilled to play along quietly. And then… In Old Spice video #4 addressed to me, the dashing Old Spice Man said (in only the way he can): “So… tell me what to do next”. Well… sounded like an invitation to me and… an innovative way to potentially do something good. So I put on the largest towel I had (more like a moo moo with a pocket) and made my own video, in my bathroom, using my iPhone.

Now, anyone that knows me or follows me on twitter knows that I’ve used Twitter to successfully raise money in the past. I had great success with my last challenge for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. In case you weren’t following me on twitter then, I challenged corporations with just a single tweet to match my 50k donation to UNICEF for the Haiti Relief Fund. From three corporations and 1 anonymous donor, I was able to raise $400,000 for UNICEF, exceeding my challenge and just being blown away. I also gave up my Birthday last for a charity:water campaign and we were able to build 18 clean water projects in Ethiopia.

So, yeah, my mentality going into the challenge was – Old Spice used my name for 4 videos and by doing so, created a lot of buzz for the brand and viral campaign. “So tell me what to do next,” seemed like an invitation I couldn’t refuse. I knew Old Spice would continue to get exposure from the exchange and visibility from my Twitter community. I did the only thing I thought that would have some positive impact and relevance – I told Mr. Old Spice what to do next just as he asked. I told him to “ to keep our relationship a’goin-on, you must make a 100,000 dollar donation to the National Wildlife Federation Gulf Relief Fund”. I think a lot of people thought I was challenging the actor who plays Old Spice Man (brilliantly, I might add) to make that donation. I was not. I was challenging the Old Spice brand, which is owned by Procter and Gamble, to make the donation. This would be my invitation back to them to do something awesome.

Here’s where we are now… I’ve been speaking with Beth who isn’t from Procter & Gamble but from the PR firm that represents them (I think that’s where she is from. Wherever she is from, she has been wonderful in answering my many questions). Beth has told me about the abundant philanthropic partnerships Procter & Gamble has and donations they’ve made. As Beth proudly tells it: “In the last few months P&G donated 5x your requested donation to the International Bird Rescue Research Center and the Marine Mammal Center and they are about to start that campaign again, which should result in another donation of $500,000.” Beth has also shared that 12,000 bottles of Dawn Liquid Soap has been sent to clean the wildlife. This is awesome. Beyond awesome and it makes me happy (seriously, way to go P&G). I do feel that I should add that on the IBRRC website it says that BP is funding their Gulf clean-up efforts and that any donations made will NOT be going to Gulf clean-up efforts but to their other programs. I may be misreading it but you can see for yourself here: http://www.ibrrc.org/ Also, it is unclear from the Marine Mammal Center website if donations are going to the clean-up efforts or if they are also receiving BP funding. But I did see: “Each bottle of Dawn you purchase can contribute one dollar to the important wildlife conservation efforts of The Marine Mammal Center and the International Bird Rescue Research Center.” Regardless of what this means (cause I honestly don’t have a clue), I applaud P&G on all their philanthropic work and the donation of 500k to these organizations.

This is all my roundabout way of saying it looks as though my specific challenge for National Wildlife Federation’s Gulf Coast Relief Fund will NOT be met by P&G BUT… the lovely Beth assures me that Proctor and Gamble would like to do something to acknowledge my challenge and will brainstorm some ideas. I have reiterated numerous times that it is important to me, that whatever they decide, I would like for it to be focused on the Gulf relief and clean up efforts. They’re actively talking about how they might cap off this back and forth with something great. I’m appreciative of the time and effort they’ve dedicated to the challenge. We all know they could do nothing at all. The fact they would do anything, makes my heart happy.

And again, I want to thank everyone for their support with Tweets and ReTweets about my Old Spice challenge. I believe it’s because of YOU and the exposure you’ve given the challenge that P&G has taken this as seriously as they have. So… thank you, thank you, thank you.

Adore you all.

Stay tuned….

Peace,
Light,
And Love,
Alyssa

The 2010 Do Something Awards will give out an award in a new category when the ceremony airs on VH1 on July 19: “Do Something on Twitter.”

The 2010 Do Something Awards will give out an award in a new category when the ceremony airs on VH1 on July 19: “Do Something on Twitter.” The award will be given to a celebrity who has effectively used Twitter for social good. There’s also a Facebook category.

The Do Somethings (formerly called the BR!CK Awards) have traditionally honored youths under 25 who have changed the world through good deeds or activism with monetary grants. Those awards are still part of the show, but celebrity categories for movie stars, musicians, comedians, athletes and more were added, creating a bit more draw for television networks.

This year’s broadcast will be hosted by Glee’s Jane Lynch (yep, Sue Sylvester herself). It will air on VH1 at 9 p.m. EST, July 19.

Celebrity nominees include:

    * Ashton Kutcher for his one million follower charity race and his work with Malaria No More.
* Hugh Jackman for offering $100,000 to charities based on how passionately followers could argue for them in 140 characters or less.
* Edward Norton for his Maasai Wilderness Conservation marathon run and the social media and web initiatives that surrounded it. (Norton recently unveiled his newest social awareness project, Crowdrise, at the Mashable Media Summit).
* Alyssa Milano for using the social network to raise money from followers for Charity: Water.
* BPGlobalPR for striking the culprits in an environmental disaster with effective satire and raising relief funds via T-shirt sales.
