The aid organizations could exclusively airlift bottled water, 24 hrs/day and still not win the battle. Perhaps somewhere in your conections or on your twitter, there might be someone to make this happen. I know the port is wrecked. You don’t need a port to offload water. The Army Core of Engineers could place a pipe and pumps to deliver this water to the center of the city within 24 hrs.

I am very happy to see that you and many other people have understood the importance of water in this disaster. However, Nobody seems to comprehend the scale of the problem. A million is a big number, but even if you could deliver 1 million liters of bottled water (highly unlikely), a liter per day is hardly enough to keep one person alive. As you and others note Haiti’s infrastructure was already decrepit and failed. Specially in Port au Prince. Here you had a concentration of millions of people who relied largely on rooftop gathering systems and leaking cisterns filled by trucked in water.

This may seem late in the day to be looking for help with this problem. It is not. The disaster will be growing hour by hour. People can survive for some time without food. At 72 hrs. without water, their prospects become poor.

but let me mention, that also there money is only one needed aspect:

enough human power is needed (on the spot, transport & logistics,…) and also enough technical infrastructure.

so – especially for the predictable aspects of the global climate change – it is important to build a permanent effective global infrastructure (manpower and equipment) for such tragic occurences. and also – far better – for optimal prevention.

in times of the financial crisis, when there is not so much money left for extra expenses, i can see no other way than reducing armed forces (for FIGHTING against others) in favor of rescue power for HELPING others.

this also might be the key for cutting the ROOT of terrorism: people will – at least in a long term-view – refuse to fight against other people/nations, who are helpful in times of need.

I’m still wrestling with a reply for your initial post. An open heart is an invitation to hurt, an open mouth is an invitation to attack. Unfortunately, I was stranded in New Orleans for weeks following Katrina, so I know what it feels like to be forgotten. I was beaten by three young African American men because I was trying to get water dropped on a roof by the military. The high school where the drops took place were gang-controlled and white people weren’t welcome. The National Guard did what they could, but there is no possible way to describe the terror of sleeping with looters, kids blowing up buildings, and fires that weren’t put out because it was deemed unnecessary (I lived in the upper 9th Ward at the time).

I’m truly sorry for what the Haitians are going through. But I’m afraid my empathy is somewhat lessened by the efforts of some to make this a race-related catastrophe. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t understand why people who are Caucasion or of European descent count so little. Again, I know by stating this I am now open to attack. I’m sure I will be. I just don’t know why human life is not all valued equally.

I have an open heart, but I also have an open mouth, unfortunately.
